In October 2023, AMI celebrated a significant milestone when our innovative game, TEAM FORGING, was seamlessly incorporated into a critical thinking course at PSB Academy. This integration allowed students to engage in complex problem-solving, collaborative project work, and dynamic project team activities, sparking “Aha!” moments for all participants, whether they completed the tasks or not.
One of the most notable outcomes was the enhancement of diversity and inclusion. The game fostered unity among students from diverse backgrounds, as each participant contributed unique perspectives and ideas while collaborating within their project teams. The game’s challenges also significantly promoted critical thinking, pushing students to think outside the box to solve complex scenarios and tasks creatively.
Interestingly, the most profound learning came not from the winning teams, but from those who didn’t complete the tasks. This highlighted the game’s role in fostering empathy. Players who were ahead learned to support their teammates who were struggling, balancing their ambition to win with the need for team cohesion. This people-oriented approach cultivated empathy, teamwork, and a strong sense of project team spirit.
”After playing the game, they truly understood all the things they needed to do to solve problems. So naturally, learners picked up problem-solving skills without me having to resort to the traditional method of direct instruction and delivery through PowerPoint.”
—Bennet Lim, Adjunct Lecturer, PSB Academy
The successful integration of TEAM FORGING into PSB Academy’s curriculum underscores the potential of serious gaming in education. As a platform that emphasizes problem-solving and teamwork through project work and project team collaboration, we look forward to seeing how this pedagogical approach continues to enrich student learning experiences at PSB Academy and beyond.
