Three Years of Transformation: The Broad Integration of the TEAM FORGING Game in Business and Engineering Programs at NUS

AMI is excited to announce the successful integration of our innovative game-based learning platform, TEAM FORGING, into various courses at the National University of Singapore (NUS) for the third consecutive year. This partnership spans across all levels of the university, from undergraduate to EMBA students, covering a broad range of topics including cross-cultural collaboration, entrepreneurship, leadership, executive leadership, and design-thinking. This milestone underscores our ongoing commitment to making a meaningful impact in the education sector through innovative learning solutions that enhance team performance and leadership skills.

In 2022, TEAM FORGING was introduced into the NUS Overseas Colleges Program, where students from Europe and Southeast Asia experienced the game’s ability to foster team formation and cross-cultural collaboration in a dynamic one-hour session. Tim-Wei Schüler, a tutor from Germany, praised the game for its effectiveness in strengthening relationships and improving communication within teams, helping to improve overall team performance.

By 2023, TEAM FORGING had expanded across various programs within the university. In the School of Engineering and Business, the game played a key role in developing a managerial mindset among master’s students. One participant, an engineer, shared that the game resonated deeply with his professional experience and enhanced his understanding of management and executive leadership perspectives.

During the same year, TEAM FORGING was incorporated into several entrepreneurship courses at NUS. The game simulated complex problem-solving scenarios and encouraged collaborative decision-making. Students engaged actively, practicing entrepreneurial skills like observation, hypothesis testing, and making decisions under uncertainty. The Cynefin framework was brought to life within the game’s immersive environment, adding depth to the learning experience.

In 2024, TEAM FORGING gained significant traction within the MBA and EMBA programs. In the CEMS Block Seminar, the game was employed on the first and last days of the course to teach concepts of Delegation and Empowerment. Students quickly realized that by applying the DARE framework, they could overcome larger challenges as a team by empowering each member, enhancing both delegation and team performance.

In the realm of design-thinking, TEAM FORGING proved to be a powerful teaching tool. The game provided numerous insightful moments, with participants showing enhanced creativity both individually and as teams. A post-game debrief led by the professor elevated the learning experience by encouraging profound reflections on the process.

“Students are fully immersed in a virtual world and have the latitude to make a variety of real-time decisions rather than choosing among an artificially limited set of options. This hands-on experience fosters critical reflection and enhances my students’ understanding of effective collaboration, ultimately preparing them for real-world teamwork challenges.”
— Prof. Emily M. David, Ph.D., NUS Business School

Over the past three years, NUS has continued to integrate TEAM FORGING across multiple topics and student levels. Its versatility in addressing a wide range of learning objectives has been well-received by both students and faculty. AMI is eager to further strengthen our collaboration with NUS, especially with the deep integration of TEAM FORGING into the EMBA program. We look forward to providing comprehensive support to additional NUS programs in the coming years, helping to shape the future of education, executive leadership, and team performance.
